Meet the Team; Introducing Jennifer
In this months' 'Meet the Team series', we're introducing you to another member of our Design team, Jennifer Todd.
Originally from the North-East, Jen moved to London earlier this year to progress her career within Life Kitchens. We're keen to hear more about her favourite trends, colours, designs and most importantly, why she decided to take the plunge and move down South!
So Jen, tell us a little bit about yourself!
Well, until recently I lived in a beautiful market town in North Yorkshire, called Yarm. On the banks of River Tees, it certainly is a little different to the hustle and bustle I now surround myself with in London!
What made you move to London?
After graduating from University, with a degree in Interior Design, I spent over eight years working in both the residential and commercial sector back in Yorkshire. The more I created kitchens, the more I realised that this is the area I wanted to focus my passion. So, after three years working in the kitchen industry at Life's head office, a position came up in their Waterloo showroom and I snapped it up.
With nearly a decade's experience in the design industry then, you must have seen many trends come and go! Do you have a personal favourite this year?
"This year, the pantry has made a huge comeback, and I love it! Whether used as a stand-alone piece or, if you’re lucky enough to have the space to create a walk-in pantry; they’re a great way to conceal appliances and unwanted clutter."
With over nine beautiful looks to choose from in the Waterloo Showroom, is there one that particularly stands out for you?
"I'm particularly drawn to a dramatic and moody statement kitchen. Our Grafton kitchen has to be my favourite – a contemporary take on the classic shaker kitchen; especially in the darker shade of Hartforth Blue, paired with metallic accents and light quartz worktop."
What’s your favourite colour combination and why?
"Contrasting colours are a key look at the moment and can work equally as well in both traditional or modern properties."
"Personally, I love mixing a contemporary palette, filled with cool Greys like Slate, Silver Grey or Dove Grey with a statement woodgrain."
Over the last three years, have you worked on anything that's stood out, or become a firm favourite?
"I love working with clients who have a similar style to me and aren’t afraid to trust my judgement on things, but equally I do like to work on projects out of my comfort zone and still produce a design the client loves. The challenge makes the positive end result more rewarding."
"Basically, I’m passionate about every design I create, as cheesy as that sounds!"
We know designing a new kitchen can be such a daunting process; do you have any advice that may help your clients get a great head start?
"Planning is key; think about how you are going to be using the space and what you’re going to be using it for. You need the kitchen to work for you as a functional and practical space as well as being aesthetically pleasing."
"Pinterest is a great tool for compiling all those inspiration pictures, aspirations and must-haves in one place! It also helps get your ideas across to your kitchen designer, ensuring the end product is perfectly suited to you."
And finally, why should people take a chance on an independent showroom?
"Working with an independent company adds a personal touch to your kitchen design experience. At Life we like to build a relationship with our clients, working with you at each stage to develop your ideas and create your perfect kitchen. We aim to produce unique designs tailored to your specific requirements and stand out from the mass-market high-street chains."
